Beta Phi Mu Honor Society Announces 2020 Scholarship and Award Winners
June 30, 2020
At its Annual Membership Meeting, held online June 27, 2020, the Beta Phi Mu International Library and Information Studies Honor Society (BPM) announced the award winners for its 2020 scholarship season. Each year, Beta Phi Mu provides multiple scholarships and awards for study and research related to Library and Information Science, in addition to administering the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships.
The winner of the Sarah Rebecca Reed Scholarship, which supports a beginning student at an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science (LIS) program, is Tobias Paul of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They will receive an award of $2,250.
The Blanche E. Woolls Scholarship for School Library Media Service supports a beginning LIS student intending to pursue a career in school library media service and attending an ALA-accredited or an American Association of School Librarians (AASL) recognized program. The winner of this year’s $2,250 award is Nicole Pereversoff of the University of Western Ontario.
The Harold Lancour Scholarship for Foreign Study was awarded to Erin Eldermire, Head of the Flower-Sprecher Veterinary Library, Cornell University Library. This $1,750 award will be used for a project to research and create guidance for best practices in searching the grey literature for evidence syntheses (ES) in agriculture and searching scholarly literature originating in Latin America, as well as learning about support that currently exists for information specialists and researchers in Latin America conducting ES, and/or the support that they need for further ES capacity development.
Five Frank B. Sessa Scholarships for Continuing Professional Education of Beta Phi Mu Members were previously awarded to Heather Arrington (Wayne State, At-Large), Laurie Fuentes (Texas Woman's University, Beta Lambda Chapter), Sarah Cruz Mendoza (University of South Florida, Beta Phi Chapter), Sara Quashnie (University of Illinois, Alpha Chapter), Katy Sternberger (Simmons University, Beta Beta Chapter). They each receive $150 toward the expenses associated with a professional continuing education opportunity of their choice. Five more Sessa Scholarships will be awarded in September, 2020.
Six recipients of the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship for 2020 were also announced. These $3,000 awards provide support for doctoral students who are working on their dissertations in Library and Information Science, Information Studies, Informatics, or a related field. The names, institutional affiliations, and dissertations working titles for the 2020 winners are listed below:
